How Nifty 50 is Calculated

The Nifty 50 uses a free-float market capitalisation-weighted methodology. This means each company's weight in the index depends on its market capitalisation, adjusted for the percentage of shares that are freely available for trading (not held by promoters, governments, or strategic investors).

The formula: Index Value = (Current Free-Float Market Cap / Base Free-Float Market Cap) × Base Value (1,000). The base date is November 3, 1995. The index switched from full market cap to free-float methodology on June 26, 2009.

This means HDFC Bank with 14% weight influences the index roughly 14 times more than a stock with 1% weight. When HDFC Bank moves 2% and the other 49 stocks are flat, Nifty 50 moves 0.28% — entirely from one stock. This concentration effect is particularly pronounced in Narrow Leadership regimes.

The index is rebalanced semi-annually (January 31 and July 31 cut-off dates). Stocks can be replaced if they no longer meet criteria: minimum listing history, sufficient free-float market cap, and adequate trading frequency.
